2018 PMI Project of The Year Winner




Our November Meeting will feature tours and a Q&A on the 2018 PMI Project of the Year Winner.

Project Summary:  

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated many areas of the city of New Orleans including the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facility. An analysis of damage and options was completed and the VA decided to construct a replacement medical center. This provided a clean slate to create an optimal environment of care for our Veterans. The VA New Orleans replacement medical center activation project is a $1 billion facility designed to serve as a tertiary care regional referral center that will serve over 70,000 veterans. The final plan was a 1.6 million square foot space designed as eight buildings connected by a 150-foot long connector, and sitting on an approximately 30-acre campus covering 12 city blocks in the center of New Orleans. This large and complex project spanned over 10 years from approval to design to construction and finally activation. We completed our multi- phased activation of Administrative Services (Dec 2015), Logistics/Support Services (Apr 2016), Outpatient Services (Dec 2016-Feb 2017) and Inpatient/Diagnostic/Procedures Services (May 2017-Feb 2018). The activation project was titled “Project Legacy” after an employee naming contest.  The name was selected because the facility needed to be designed to serve veterans who had not yet been born and would be a legacy to the city and veterans it would serve.
